Mexico City had long played host to a thriving sex trade, and in 1904 officials registered 10,000 prostitutes out of a total urban population of 368,000 ... Renowned social hygienist, Dr. Luis Lara y Pardo shocked many when he figured that between 15 and 30 percent of Mexico City's female population participated in the sex trade.
