Included are letters, documents (including 9 volumes of contemporary copies), commonplace books, manuscripts, with a few sketches. The papers document the relations between the U.S. and the Barbary states, the Tripolitan War (1801-05), James Leander Cathcart, naval operations of the U.S. and European powers. Also included are items related to Eaton's professional and personal affairs -- his army career, business transactions, claims against the U.S., and relations with his family and friends. Correspondents include Samuel Barron, James Leander Cathcart, Rufus King, James Madison, Richard O'Brien, Timothy Pickering, and others.

This commonplace book originates in England, after 1783, and primarily contains entries regarding agriculture. Numerous sketches of farming equipment, including thrashing and churning machines, as well as advice for planting vegetables, caring for livestock, and the nature of various geographical locations regarding farming are included. Scattered throughout the book are transcriptions of letters and portrait sketches. The user of this book is unknown; while the name "Margaretta G. Haynes" is written on the inside cover, the handwriting does not match that of the entries. Possibly done by Nicholas King, the first surveyor of Washington, D.C.
