Walter E. Scott [Death Valley Scotty] letter to "Dear friend Miss Irean [Irene?]"

In this letter, Scott acknowleges Irene's letter of October 20th and thanks her for the invitation to visit. He promises to call on them when he gets in to Los Angeles. He writes that he has been in the mountains with the pack mules, but has been laid up due to injuries. He asks Irene to tell Willard that he is okay. Scott writes that he hears that Johnson is bankrupt and that the government has taken possession of the castle. He's not sure because he doesn't see Johnson very often and hasn't seen him at all since last Thanksgiving. Scott mentions the Borax works and the "so called 'National Park.'" He also declares that he refuses to do anymore "ballyhooing jest for that D.V. [Death Valley] hot dog joint" and says that they are all jealous because he has the castle. Scott writes that there is no one at the castle save himself and the house boy. He relates that he is doing fine and to tell Willard that he can weather any storm. Cover envelope is addressed to Willard c/o City Editor--Los Angeles Examiner, Los Angeles, Cal. and is postmarked possibly Barstow, Calif., Nov, 15 1928. A second and third postmark on the verso is from Los Angeles, Calif., 8PM, Nov 15, 1928.

Maria Fitzherbert letter to William Porden

An autograph, signed letter addressed to "Sir" and dated on the verso, "1803 dec 12;" on the top of the page, in pencil in another hand, is written "To Wm Porden." The letter only briefly mentions the Prince of Wales and is mainly about the installation, placement and use of a stove in a house that is being built. William Porden was the architect who designed Steine House in Brighton, England, for Fitzherbert; she lived there from 1804 until her death in 1837. The letter was mounted on board by a previous owner.

A bound music manuscript with score and words, bound in red morocco gilt; the manuscript was not composed by Rousseau but only copied out and illustrated by him. Laid into the volume are a page from the sale catalogue and a letter from J. Pearson and Company, Rare Books and Autographs, to Messers. B. F. Stevens and Brown (March 25, 1902); the letter provides provenance for the volume and states it was written by Rousseau for presentation to his patron, the Marquis de Girardin, whose arms are on the binding.

A.L.S., signed [K] Montagu; the letter was written to her brother-in-law Henry requesting a carriage to use for making visits on behalf of her sister Jane. This letter was formerly laid into the Bridgewater copy of Ireland, Laws, Statutes (RB 612812 v. 12).
