  Drawing Horses

  One drawing book entitled Drawing Horses, by Victor Perard, published by Pitman Publishing Corporation, New York and Chicago, copyright 1944. This book is 64 unnumbered pages in length, and provides step-by-step instructions for drawing horses and similar animals, such as mules and donkeys. All of the images are in black and white, and most pages contain at least some instructional text. The front cover is printed in brown on green paper; it features several images below the title from within the book. The imagery on the back cover is a duplicate of the front cover. "$1.00" is printed in the lower right-hand corner of the front and back covers. The inside of the front cover is blank; the inside of the back cover is a publisher's advertisement for "Pitman Art Series by Victor Perard." Laid inside the front cover are two newspaper clippings, dated 1951 and 1947 respectively.

  One drawing book entitled Krüsi's Drawing: Synthetic Series, New series, No. 2, published by D. Appleton & Co., New York, copyright 1878. This book consists of 16 pages of geometric designs, which emphasize the practice of lines and shapes. Suggestions to Teachers are printed on the inside of the front cover, and specifics of line drawing are outlined on the inside of the back cover. On each page are the illustrations and space intended for copying. The front cover is decoratively bordered; the back cover is a publisher's advertisement for Model Copy-Books in six numbers (penmanship studies), offered by D. Appleton & Co. Laid inside the book are three sheets of paper, two of which are blank. The third contains several original illustrations. A blue ownership stamp of I.A. Dexter is on the front cover.

  Harper's Writing Books: Symmetrical Penmanship with Marginal Drawing Lessons, for Schools and Families

  Visual Materials

  One penmanship book entitled Harper's Writing Books: Symmetrical Penmanship with Marginal Drawing Lessons, for Schools and Families, published by Harper & Brothers, New York, 1868. The subtitle reads: School and Family Series: Writing and Drawing, In Ten Numbers, Number 5. This penmanship practice book is 24 pages in length. Across the top of each page are the letters, phrases or sentences which are to be copied in the lined spaces below. Along the outer vertical margin of each page is a shaded block of figures and drawing exercises to be copied. On the front cover, the title surrounds several images and vignettes of people writing and drawing. The centered vignette shows three students seated at a table, writing. Instructional text, including specific directions for Book 5, are printed on the inside of the front cover, and continue on to the inside of the back cover. The back cover also features instructions for using and copying the additional exercises found in the margins of the book. None of the exercises have been completed.

  One drawing book entitled Freehand Drawing of Ornament. A Collection of Drawing Copies Reproduced from Original Photographs, Selected and Arranged, by Robert Bunting, published by C. Arthur Pearson Limited, London, ca. 1890. Title copy is framed by a decorative border. "Pearson's School Series" is printed above the title, and "Price Half-a-Crown" is printed below the publisher's statement. This book contains 22 numbered, photographed images of floral and decorative ornaments (originals in stone), on perforated paper, so that each leaf may be torn out if desired. The first 2 unnumbered pages are principally textual, giving "Suggestions for freehand drawing from the cast of photographs." Each of the numbered images is protected by a guardsheet (none of the sheets have been removed). The inside of the front cover is blank. Printed on the inside back cover is: "Miller, Son and Compy., Limited, Printers, Finsbury Circus Buildings, London, E.C." The back cover is an advertisement for "Pearson's Attractive Drawing Books, by Robert Bunting." Laid in between ornaments 10 and 11 is a single sheet of "Standard Tracing Cloth", light gray and has the company logo printed in green on it (another is contained in envelope 6).

  One pamphlet entitled Industrial Drawing in Public Schools: A Course of Three Lectures Addressed to the Principals and Teachers of the Primary, Grammar, and High Schools of the City of Boston, by Walter Smith, published by L. Prang and Company, Boston, 1875. Also on the title page is printed "Published by Request." This book is 54 numbered pages in length, and is divided into 3 sections, one for each of the three school levels. Each section addresses issues relevant to the teaching of drawing and industrial drawing in the schools. A few white-on-black reproductions of drawing cards from the Smith system are included in the book. The insides of both covers, as well as the back cover, are blank.

  One booklet entitled A Course of Free-Hand, Model, and Object Drawing: Designed for Primary, Grammar, and High Schools, by Professor Walter Smith, published by Noyes, Holmes, and Company, Boston, 1872. At the bottom of the cover is printed, "J.W.C. Gilman, Agent." This booklet consists of 16 unnumbered pages, including the front and back covers. It appears to be a publisher's advertisement for the Smith drawing system and its products. The first few pages are advertisements for drawing slates, drawing-cards and drawing books. The next few pages are an overview of the general method of the system, and "Specimen Pages from 'The Teachers' Companion'", with white-on-black illustrations. The back cover (also the last page) are listed "Reasons for Adopting the American Drawing Series", signed by J.W.C. Gilman, Agent for Introduction. The front cover of this advertisement features an illustration of a drawing slate and drawing cards.
