"RNOX 37.50 The Union, which operated from San Francisco to Panama from 1850 to 1851, first for the People's Line and then for the Independent Line, was wrecked at San Quintín Bay, Baja California, on July 5, 1851 supposedly due to intoxicated crew; all passengers and crew were saved. The Northerner, built in 1847, was purchased by Pacific Mail Steamship Company from Empire City Line in December 1850; she became spare steamer in 1853, and was wrecked, January 5, 1860, after striking Blunt's Reef, south of Humbolt Bay.
