The collection consists of manuscripts and correspondence by and to Eugene Field (1850-1895). The manuscripts are mostly autograph copies of Field's own poems. The collection also contains 33 letters from Eugene Field to his wife, Julia Sutherland Comstock Field (b. 1857). These letters date from both before and after their marriage in 1873, and many are from Eugene Field's trip to Europe in 1873. The collection also contains letters written to Eugene Field, including one letter from Edward David Cowen, one from Hildegarde Hawthorne, and two letters from Washington Irving Way. There is also one letter in the collection from Eugene Field to Julian Hawthorne.

Field or his son, Walter Field (also an artist). A few of the letters concern Field's attempts to establish an artistic copyright law. The collection includes two letters from George Cruikshank, one letter from Sir John Everett Millais, and three letters from Samuel Cousins.

A few of the letters concern Field's efforts to pass some kind of measure ensuring artistic copyright. Stephen J. (Stephen Johnson) Field receipts to Charles Covilland

These two manuscripts are receipts written by Stephen J. Field acknowledging payment received from Charles Covilland. The first receipt (HM 43202) is dated 1856, May 23, and is payment for Field's legal expertise related to property owned by Covilland. The second (HM 43203, dated 1857, April 25) is a bill to Covilland for Field's legal services and clerking fees.
